Whether or not you’re a “Swiftie”, it’s hard to deny Taylor Swift’s status as a musical icon. This course will take you a journey of Swift’s career to better understand her rise to fame and its impact on society. We’ll look at her popularity through the lens of economics and culture, considering ticket sales, concert dates and her relationship with Travis Kelce. We’ll examine Swift’s decision to re-record the music she published with Big Machine Records from a legal and feminist perspective, and we’ll consider the impact of the Eras Tour from the lens of environmentalism and climate change.

Biographie

Dr. Jennifer Dumoulin completed her Ph.D. at the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa and her J.D. at Queen’s University. Her doctoral research project examined how storytelling in popular fiction can influence policy and other societal responses to persons living with illness and disease. During her Ph.D. presented at Comic-Con San Diego on the relationship between fandom and tattoo culture. She is also a published author in the areas of military law and human rights. Jennifer has been a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa since 2018 and currently works full-time with the federal government.
