Description du cours
This course introduces students to the essential skills for crafting compelling narratives and strong written arguments, blending creative and academic writing techniques. Students will explore how to structure their ideas, develop clear and engaging content, and refine their writing for different purposes. By the end of the course, students will have created a polished piece of writing, whether it be a story, an essay, or a personal reflection.Day 1: The Foundations of Writing
We begin by exploring what makes writing effective in both creative and academic contexts. Students will learn about the importance of structure, clarity, and purpose. Through interactive brainstorming and group discussions, students will practice organizing their ideas and creating an outline for their chosen writing project.
Day 2: Building Characters and Arguments
In creative writing, characters drive the story; arguments are the foundation in academic writing. This session will teach students to create dynamic characters for narratives or strong essay thesis statements. Activities include crafting character profiles or brainstorming evidence-based arguments to support a claim.
Day 3: Structuring Stories and Essays
Students will learn how to structure a piece of writing to engage and inform readers. We will explore the narrative arc for stories and the essay format (introduction, body, conclusion) for academic writing. Activities include outlining a story or essay and practicing transitions between ideas.
Day 4: Adding Depth and Detail
Students will focus on refining their work by incorporating vivid details, persuasive evidence, and emotional resonance. They will learn to use descriptive language in storytelling and integrate quotes, statistics, and examples in essays. Group workshops will provide opportunities for peer feedback.
Day 5: Polishing and Presenting
The final session is dedicated to editing and presenting the finished pieces. Students will receive tips on proofreading and formatting their work for impact. The course concludes with a showcase where participants share their stories, essays, or reflections with their peers, celebrating their growth as writers.
While participation is encouraged daily to build necessary writing skills, days 1, 3, and 5 are mandatory as they include essential content and skills imperative in the writing process. Attendance on day 5 is mandatory as the final writing assignment is due.
