Did you know… Some languages are written in a zigzag pattern? One language has five different past tenses, depending on how long ago something happened? There are languages that can be whistled as well as spoken? There are roughly 7000 languages in the world, and linguistics is the field that studies their similarities and differences. Come discover linguistics for yourself! In this course, we'll explore language through linguistics puzzles: fun, game-like problems that introduce new and surprising aspects of language, with no background knowledge required. Learn about languages, solve puzzles, and create your own, in Discovering Linguistics!

Biography

Daniel Lovsted is a graduate student at the University of Ottawa and a co-organizer of NACLO, a linguistics puzzle contest in Canada and the U.S. This is his second year facilitating the Discovering Linguistics minicourse.
