Course Description
Scientists and enthusiasts have long relied on airborne platforms to explore, observe or study our planet. The journey began with balloons and kites, followed by planes and satellites. These traditional platforms have been invaluable, but sometimes very complex and costly to maintain. Enter drones (or UAVs)—affordable, easy to operate, and equipped to carry cameras and other sensors such as thermometers or radiometers. This mini-course invites you to get hands-on with drones, exploring how they are transforming fields like geography, environmental studies, and science into more accessible, dynamic areas of research.
Biography
My name is Erika Brummell, I am a MSc student here at uOttawa and I research glaciers and icebergs in the Canadian Arctic! Throughout my studies, I have had the opportunity to investigate glaciers in places like Nunavut, Svalbard, and Tanzania all while using drones along the way. Outside of research I am passionate about arts, rock climbing, and running. Over the last few years, I have shared my passions about remote sensing technologies by teaching the 'Drones at the Service of the Environment' mini course. I encourage any student who is interested in the environment, remote sensing, and drones to join this course!
