Course Description
Have you ever wanted to achieve global domination? Join us for an eye-opening journey into the tactics that threaten global democracy! In ""How to Rig a Foreign Election,"" students will learn about the democratic process and the ways it can be manipulated by other countries for their own benefit. Through interactive lessons, students will not only learn about the tactics employed but also the broader implications for democracy and global stability. We’ll start by breaking down the basics of what foreign interference is and why countries meddle in each other’s elections in the first place. Next, we’ll dive into the legal issues surrounding foreign interference under Canadian and international law. We’ll also investigate the high-stakes world of cyber interference, exploring the use of cyberattacks, such as hacking and phishing, to disrupt democracy. Finally, we will look at the critical role of social media in shaping electoral outcomes through disinformation campaigns and learn how to recognize the signs of manipulation on the TikTok “For You Page”.
We’ll finish the class by putting our newfound knowledge to the test by orchestrating our own campaign to interfere in the election of a fictional state. Get ready for an unforgettable journey into the power plays that shape our world! Make sure to join us for project instructions on April 30th and the presentations on May 2nd.
