Course Description

Have you ever wondered how Latin American women have formed such a strong movement? What are the historical roots that make the earth tremble behind their feet? Latin American women have historical wounds where gender, class, race and age vulnerabilities are mixed in a paradoxical and antagonistic configuration of exploitation and fighting. Here, we will deeply address this History of combat and its historical roots. Moreover, we will see how these vulnerabilities paradoxically contribute to feminist development and strengthening. During five days, we will be in touch with different kinds of primary sources that emerged first-hand from Latin America, for instance, on the one hand, "La voz de la Mujer" [The Woman's Voice] newsletter written by Uruguayan and Argentinian anarchist women at the end of the 19th Century, among others like "La Obrera Textil" [The Texil Women Worker] newspaper written by Argentinian textile women workers during the 30th decade of the 20th Century among other written sources. On the other hand, more recent sources like media news, videos, and photographs, among many others. This course is based on primary sources and the labour of historians. Here, you will be in touch with History in the sense of Hands-on History. We will explore these topics by doing History, which means we will ask questions about the primary sources, formulate hypotheses, and debate feminist theory starting from the sources. If you want to do history from a feminist perspective and learn about feminism in Latin America, this is your place!
