Introduction to LGBTQ Studies

Institution: Carleton University (Carleton University)
Category: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Language: English

Course Description

This course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer studies, from the historical emergence of the field to the contemporary cultural and political issues that remain central to the discipline. Students’ critical thinking, writing, and presentation skills will be sharpened through an exploration of film, art, archives, oral histories, and literature organized into thematic units. Course materials will emphasise how LGBTQ identities intersect with other axes of difference including, but not limited to, class, gender, race, ethnicity, citizenship, and ability. This will be an interactive and lively discussion-based seminar that will prepare students for future studies within gender and sexuality studies and/or greater engagement with queer/trans human rights activism.
